Today marks the 158th Memorial Day — a day of remembrance, honor, and reverence. As I reflect on the meaning behind this national holiday, one quote has stayed with me:
“Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it.”
The author of this quote remains unknown, much like the thousands of men and women who gave their lives without ever being recognized by name. Their stories, their dreams, and their futures were given up in service of something larger than themselves — our freedom.
This quote hits hard because it reminds us that the privileges we enjoy — the ability to speak freely, pursue opportunity, live safely — are not just abstract rights. They are the result of immense sacrifice. They came at a cost that most of us will never have to pay, thanks to those who did.
In my own life, I’ve been blessed to have family members who served. I’ve witnessed the pride, the discipline, the humility that comes with wearing the uniform. I’ve heard the stories, felt the weight of their memories, and seen the camaraderie that only those who’ve served can truly understand.
I also count myself lucky to call many veterans and active-duty soldiers my friends. Their continued service and selflessness never cease to inspire me.
On this Memorial Day, I hope we all take a moment not just to enjoy the day off or the beginning of summer — but to truly pause and reflect. Think about the lives behind the headlines. The families left behind. The silent legacies carried by every folded flag.
We may not know all their names. But we know the freedom they’ve secured.
To the fallen heroes, to the families who carry on without them, to the veterans still with us, and to those currently serving:
Thank you. We remember. We honor. We will not forget.
